Validation is the work of proving, before you spend real money, that the device is worth building. At this stage you are answering three questions honestly. Is the clinical problem real and painful enough that someone will change behavior to solve it? Is the market large enough and reachable enough to build a company around? And do the people who would actually buy or use the device want the thing you are imagining, or the thing you assume they want?
Most medical device failures are not engineering failures. They are demand failures. A device works exactly as designed and still does not sell, because the need was smaller than the founder believed, the buyer was different than assumed, or the existing workaround was good enough. Validation is the cheapest work you will ever do, and it is the stage that prevents the most expensive mistakes downstream.
Skip validation and everything after it inherits the risk. You raise money on a shaky premise, engineer toward a need nobody confirmed, clear a device the market shrugs at, and discover the truth only after the launch budget is spent. Do validation well and every later stage gets easier, because funding, product decisions, and go to market strategy all trace back to a need you actually proved.

How do you validate a medical device idea?
You validate a medical device idea by confirming three things before you build: that the clinical need is real, that the market is large and reachable enough to support a company, and that buyers want your specific solution. That means interviewing clinicians and buyers, studying how the problem is handled today, sizing the addressable market, and testing your concept against the existing workaround. Validation is evidence-gathering, not opinion, and it should happen before significant development spend.
What is the difference between a market and a need?
A need is a clinical or operational problem that someone would pay to solve. A market is the set of reachable buyers large enough to build a business around. A device can address a real need that is too small, too fragmented, or too well-served by existing options to be a viable market. Validation checks both: the need has to be real, and the market around it has to be big enough and accessible enough to justify the build.
How big does a medical device market need to be?
There is no single threshold, because it depends on your funding path, cost to build, and the margin your device commands. What matters is that the reachable market, the buyers you can actually sell to given your specialty, geography, and regulatory scope, is large enough to return the investment required to develop and launch. Investors will pressure-test your market sizing, so build it bottom up from real buyer counts rather than top down from a large industry figure.
Should I talk to buyers before building a prototype?
Yes. Talking to clinicians, administrators, and procurement buyers before you build is the single highest-return activity at this stage. It costs almost nothing and can save years. Buyer conversations reveal whether the problem is real, how it is handled today, what would make someone switch, and who actually controls the purchase. Build the prototype to test what you learned, not to discover whether anyone wanted it.
What is market research for a medical device?
Market research for a medical device combines quantitative sizing, how many procedures, facilities, or patients define the addressable market, with qualitative discovery, structured interviews with the clinicians and buyers who would adopt it. Good research maps the current workaround, the switching cost, the decision-makers, and the evidence buyers will demand. It turns founder assumptions into documented findings you can build funding and product decisions on.
