Module 5 of 8 · after Build & Prepare to Launch · next Selling to Your Buyers
Launch & Go-to-Market
Launch is where strategy meets the market. The goal is to turn a cleared, market-ready device into a growing one by executing a go to market strategy that reaches the right buyers, in the right order, with the right message, at the right time. This is the stage the whole Roadmap has been building toward, and it is the stage where the earlier work pays off or exposes its gaps.
A go to market strategy answers a connected set of questions. Which segment do you win first, and why that one? How do you price and position against the current standard? Which channels reach your buyers, and in what sequence, so that awareness, evidence, and sales pressure build on each other instead of firing at random? And how do you time the launch around clearance, evidence, and the events where your buyers gather? The answer is a launch playbook: a sequenced plan rather than a burst of activity.
Sequencing is the part companies most often get wrong. A launch is not one event; it is a wave. Early clinical champions and a beachhead segment come first, because their adoption becomes the evidence that persuades the more cautious majority and the committees behind them. Fire everything at everyone on day one and you spend your budget on buyers who were never going to move first, while the champions who could have carried the launch get no special attention.
What breaks if you skip a real go to market strategy is momentum. Devices with strong clinical merit stall in the market every year because the launch had no beachhead, no sequence, and no plan for turning early wins into broader adoption. A cleared device is not a launched device. This stage is what closes that gap.
This is commercial and marketing work. Keep all claims inside the regulatory boundaries established in Module 3.

What is a medical device go to market strategy?
A medical device go to market strategy is the plan for reaching and winning the specific buyers who decide whether your device is adopted. It defines your first target segment, your positioning and pricing against the current standard, your channel mix and its sequence, and your launch timing. Because device purchases involve clinicians, committees, and procurement, the strategy has to address multiple decision-makers and sequence the launch so early wins build toward broader adoption rather than firing at every buyer at once.
How do you launch a medical device?
You launch a medical device by executing a sequenced go to market plan: win a focused beachhead segment and early clinical champions first, use their adoption as the evidence that persuades the broader market and its committees, and build awareness, evidence, and sales pressure in a deliberate order. Timing is anchored to clearance and to the conferences where your buyers gather. A launch is a wave you build, not a single day of activity.
What is a beachhead in a medical device launch?
A beachhead is the focused first segment a device wins before expanding to the broader market, chosen because it is reachable, motivated, and influential. Landing the beachhead produces the early adopters and real-world results that become the evidence more cautious buyers and value analysis committees require. Trying to win the whole market at once, instead of starting with a beachhead, spreads the launch budget thin and leaves no proof to carry the device into wider adoption.
How do you price a new medical device?
Pricing a new device means positioning its cost against the value it delivers relative to the current standard, in terms your buyers evaluate, cost per case, total cost of ownership, or clinical and operational benefit. Because hospital and ASC buyers scrutinize economics closely, price has to be defensible with a clear value story, not set in isolation. Pricing strategy connects directly to positioning: the price signals where the device sits in the market and what it claims to be worth.
What is the difference between commercialization and launch?
Commercialization is the entire process of turning a cleared device into a revenue-generating product, including pricing, channel model, sales infrastructure, and market access. Launch is the concentrated push that introduces the device to the market and drives initial adoption. Launch is a phase within commercialization. A device can launch well and still stall if the broader commercialization work, sales model, reimbursement, and account expansion, is not in place behind it.
